5 Delightful Things to Do in Slovenia in the Winter

By mzaxazm

Slovenia is a beautiful country to visit during the winter months. With snow-capped mountains, festive markets, and plenty of indoor activities, there’s something for everyone.

Here are five delightful things to do in Slovenia in the winter.

Go Skiing or Snowboarding in the Julian Alps

The Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia offer excellent conditions for winter sports. Ski resorts like Kranjska Gora, Vogel, and Krvavec have well-groomed slopes for all levels. The views of the mountain peaks and valleys covered in snow are breathtaking.

Many resorts also have cross-country ski trails and areas for snowshoeing. Be sure to sample some of the hearty mountain cuisine like žganci or štruklji after a long day on the slopes.

Wander Through Ljubljana’s Festive Christmas Markets

The capital city of Ljubljana sparkles during the winter months. From late November to early January, Old Town hosts a charming Christmas market filled with festive gifts and decorations. Sip hot mulled wine or try delicious Slovenian treats like potica and sausages as you browse the wooden stalls.

Listen to Christmas carols and watch ice skaters glide around the outdoor ice rink. The market’s lively but cozy atmosphere makes it a perfect winter activity.

Relax in a Thermal Spa

Slovenia is home to dozens of natural thermal spas located in scenic spots across the country. Spend a relaxing day soaking in the warm mineral water and enjoying spa treatments. Terme Čatež near Brežice has one of the largest thermal parks in Europe.

Other popular spas include Terme Olimia, Terme Lendava, and Terme Dobrna. The geothermal pools and water slides are great for families. It’s a soothing way to unwind after time spent outdoors.

Go Ice Skating Outdoors

When lakes and ponds freeze over in Slovenia’s colder months, it opens up opportunities for outdoor ice skating. Lake Bled is especially lovely to skate on, with its island and surrounding Julian Alps as a backdrop.

Other nice spots are Black Lake in Bohinj and Lake Jasna near Kranjska Gora. Not a figure skater? No worries – you can rent skates and hold onto a penguin aid if needed. Gather friends or family for hot chocolate after gliding gracefully on the ice.

See the Wild Horses of the Pohorje Mountains

One unique winter highlight is spotting the wild Pohorje horses in northeastern Slovenia’s Pohorje Mountains. More than 200 of these beautiful animals roam freely through the forests and valleys near Maribor.

Take a guided tour by horse-drawn carriage to observe these majestic horses against the snowy scenery. Bring your camera, as it’s a rare treat to see wild horses up close in winter. With a bit of luck, you may spot a new foal too!

No matter your interests, whether you’re into backpacking or luxury travel, Slovenia offers many magical things to see and do during the winter season. Just be sure to pack warm clothes, as temperatures can get quite chilly!

Also, you may need to apply for a Slovenia visa online if traveling to the country from outside Europe. With the proper Schengen visa and a sense of adventure, you’ll be sure to have a delightful time in Slovenia this winter.
