Oh honey, don’t expect to see Samantha Jones back on your screen anytime soon.
Kim Cattrall, who starred for six years as PR executive Samantha in “Sex and the City,” gave an update July 21 on the future of her character in the HBO show’s spinoff series, “And Just Like That…”
Cattrall responded to a tweet with an Elle article headlined, “It Looks Like Samantha Jones Will Be Back For ‘And Just Like That…’ Season 3 After All.”
“Aw that’s so kind but I’m not,” Cattrall wrote, adding a lipstick kiss emoji.
Cattrall briefly appeared in Season 2 of the spinoff in a cameo. Up until that point, her character had only appeared as a name in Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) phone.
The first season explained that Samantha had moved to London and had a falling out with Carrie after the writer fired her as a publicist. (Their characters’ feud notably mirrors the real life alleged feud between Cattrall and Parker.)
In the short scene from the Season 2 finale, Samantha calls Carrie from a cab, explaining that she had intended to be at the Last Supper party christening the Manhattan apartment Carrie was moving out of.
“My flight’s three hours delayed, Carrie. I won’t be able to make it there in time,” Samantha says.
The two exchange a touching moment over the phone and say their goodbyes.
Since news of the cameo leaked in May 2023, Cattrall has been clear that she intended for the appearance to be a one-time thing.
“It felt like dipping my toe back in time and having a wonderful afternoon, and then a great martini,” she said on TODAY in June 2023.
When it came to “dipping” her toe further, “that’s as far as I’ll go,” she said.
But in the wider world of “And Just Like That…,” Samantha is omnipresent, according to director and writer Michael Patrick King.
“In my multiverse of ‘And Just Like That,’ ‘Sex and the City,’ they were always talking. Always,” King said on the “And Just Like That…The Writers Room” podcast. “Texting and talking — and not just Carrie, but Samantha and Miranda and Charlotte.”
“And Just Like That…” was renewed for a third season last August. Production kicked off in May.
