MultiVersus, Warner Bros and Player First Games’ free-to-play crossover fighter, has gone through some solid highs and some devastating lows ever since its initial release. It seems that both companies are trying different ways to save the game’s reputation, and this latest one may be just what it needs.
On MultiVersus‘ official website, Player First Games revealed an upcoming new feature called Fighter Road, which will allow players to unlock new fighters way more easily. With this, they will be able to earn experience points (known as Fighter Road XP) by playing through matches, and special events or by purchasing them directly.
When a player earns enough, they can choose a character from the roster and unlock them permanently and, fortunately, they can also test each one of them on the Lab before making a final choice. Weirdly enough, Fighter Road will be divided into different tiers that group certain characters together, with Shaggy, Banana Guard, Wonder Woman, and Batman being placed in the first one. While this isn’t that big of a deal, it also means that players won’t have as much freedom as they initially thought.
What will happen to MultiVersus‘ preexisting currency, known as fighter currency? Player First Games revealed that it’s basically getting rid of it and, while players won’t be able to earn more, they can still use their remaining surplus to purchase any characters they want. Keep this in mind when Fighter Road launches on November 12, alongside Season 4 of the game.
Is Fighter Road enough to save MultiVersus?
Fighter Road seems to be a reasonable improvement, especially after gamers have heavily criticized the process of unlocking new characters in MultiVersus. While players can earn fighter currency in-game without spending a cent, the process is painstakingly slow and feels extremely “grindy”, according to most of them. Fighter Road has the potential to fix this and finally, let players unlock their favorite characters in a quicker and more entertaining way.
According to IGN, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently admitted that MultiVersus underperformed, but that the company recognizes its business, and it’s going to keep focusing on it. The coincidental announcement of Fighter Road seems like damage control from Warner Bros and Player First Games in order to try and attract a higher player base that doesn’t want to grind for all these popular cartoon and film characters as much.
It’s hard to tell if Fighter Road will save MultiVersus and its reputation, but it definitely is a step in the right direction. Fan reaction to the announcement has been very positive so far, with many players claiming that this is just what MultiVersus needed, even if some of them are lamenting the loss of all the fighter currency they worked so hard to get.
