Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie were surprised by some special guests when they took in an early screening of “Wicked” on Nov 12.
Two of the film’s stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, sat down with Hoda and Cynthia to talk about the movie, while also teaming up to sing “I’m Every Woman,” the classic song originated by Chaka Khan and famously covered by Whitney Houston.
In a clip of the interview that aired Nov. 13 on TODAY, Hoda asked them if there’s a song they enjoy singing together.
“‘I’m Every Woman,'” they said at the same time while looking at each other, before Erivo noted they hadn’t actually performed it for anyone else.
When Hoda asked if they would perform “one second of it,” the stars didn’t miss a beat and began belting it out.
After the segment aired on TODAY, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu reacted to the moment online.
“I mean. Come. On. These two are a gift,” he said on X.
You can see Hoda and Savannah’s full interview on Nov. 14 on TODAY.
You can also hear Grande and Erivo do a lot of other singing when “Wicked” opens Nov. 22.
