Amazon Orders Tomb Raider Live-Action Series

Six years after the last Tomb Raider movie, Lara Croft is heading back to live-action at Amazon. Prime Video has announced that a new live-action Tomb Raider series is going forward from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag and one of the leading performers in last year’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Waller-Bridge was attached to write the series in January 2023.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” said Waller-Bridge in a statement. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

It’s currently unknown if Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series will focus on a younger Lara Croft, as played by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 movie, or the older and more experienced Lara as embodied by Angelina Jolie in the first two films.

Given the ambitious scope of the Tomb Raider games and movies, it may be a few years before Prime Video’s show arrives. In the meantime, Netflix has already lined up an animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which will premiere later this year with Haley Atwell lending her voice to Lara.

The Tomb Raider series was only the latest announcement from Amazon Prime Video’s upfront presentation today. Prime Video kicked things off with the first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, before announcing that Nicolas Cage will star in a Spider-Man Noir-inspired series. Additionally, The Boys was renewed for Season 5 by Prime Video.
