How to get more than one pet in Stardew Valley 1.6

Players are usually limited to a single pet in Stardew Valley. This feature has caused several rows between my friends and me, as I’m a cat person, and they prefer dogs. Fortunately, that issue is now fixed. Here’s how to get more than one pet in Stardew Valley 1.6.

How to get a cat or dog in Stardew Valley 1.6

If you’re a new player, you may wonder how to get one pet, let alone multiple. When you create your farm, you can choose your ‘Animal Preference’ from a small list of cats and dogs. On the 10th day, Marnie will show up at your farm and offer you the pet you chose during Character Creation.

Cats and Dogs are low maintenance in Stardew Valley, and you can interact with them daily. Petting daily and refilling the water bowl outside will increase your pet’s friendship rating. If you want additional pets, it’s important to interact with your starter each day.

Pets work quite differently from other farm animals and don’t offer any sellable produce.

If you pet your cat or dog daily and keep their water bowl filled, your relationship with them will improve. You can keep track of this in the new Animals Tab, which you can access by pressing ESC. Once you reach the max level with your starter, you can adopt another pet.

If you are adopting a second pet at your farm, you need a new water bowl. You can purchase one from Robin for 5000G and 25 Hardwood. Once you have the 2nd bowl, you’ll be able to adopt a new pet from Marnie the following day.

The pet trade in Stardew Valley feels like a money laundering scheme, as additional animals are quite expensive. Most pets cost 40,000G, but you can go all the way up to 500,000G if you want to show off.

Are there any new features for pets in Stardew Valley 1.6?

I have not seen all the new features for pets, but the patch notes explain a few additions. Turtles have been added to the game and can be adopted like any other pet. Water bowls can also be moved, which is an excellent addition as they were stuck in place before update 1.6.

Finally, a new item called Butterfly Powder allows you to remove pets. I don’t know what ‘removing’ entails, but I’m in no hurry to evict my pets.

The 1.6 update is full of secrets the community will be unraveling for a while. There are also plenty of less obscure additions, including a Book Keeper vendor who’s well worth visiting if you have cash to spare.
