The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim just hit theaters this weekend, but you can already preorder the anime on 4K Blu-ray. And yes, the anime is indeed getting a 4K Blu-ray with a steelbook case. The War of the Rohirrim’s Limited Edition Steelbook is available to preorder for $38 at Amazon and Gruv. Given the immense popularity of The Lord of the Rings, you’ll want to secure your preorder for the collectible edition as soon as possible. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this one sell out fast at Amazon. For more The War of the Rohirrim collectibles, including action figures and Funko Pops, check out our merch roundup.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim – Amazon Preorders
$38
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s Limited Edition Steelbook contains 4K Blu-ray, 1080p Blu-ray, and digital versions of the new anime. With Amazon’s preorder price guarantee, you’ll only pay the lowest price offered from the time you order and release. To be honest, I’m a bit surprised Amazon’s starting price is $38 for this edition. With this being Lord of the Rings and the price of steelbooks lately, I would’ve expected higher.
This steelbook looks pretty great, too, with character art of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox) and Hera (voiced by Gaia Wise). The interior of the case features a map of Rohan, which is a nice nod to the books, many of which feature similarly designed maps on the interior covers or as fold-out inserts.
Preorders are currently available at Amazon and Gruv, and Walmart’s listing should go live soon. Walmart is also taking preorders on an exclusive steelbook edition of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, which releases January 7.
$28
If you don’t care about steelbook cases, you can preorder the non-steelbook version of the 4K Blu-ray edition for $28 at Amazon or Walmart. The actual case hasn’t been revealed, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the awesome movie poster shown above is the cover art. The standard 4K release, at least at this time, appears to only come with the 4K Blu-ray disc and a digital copy, not the standard Blu-ray. We’ll update this if the listings change to include the standard Blu-ray disc, too.
$23
The standard 1080p Blu-ray edition is up for preorder for $23 at Amazon. This edition will likely have the same cover art as the standard 4K edition. Amazon’s listing only notes the Blu-ray disc, so it seems you might not get a digital copy with this one.
More Lord of the Rings Preorders
The War of the Rohirrim was created by anime studio Sola Digital Arts. The film is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and took inspiration from Peter Jackson’s beloved trilogy of films. Based on an entry in the appendix of The Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim focuses on the kingdom of Rohan and its ruler Helm Hammerhand–the namesake of Helm’s Deep–and the kingdom’s war with the Dunlending raiders of Dunedain.
The 4K Blu-ray release of the anime obviously won’t be available to gift this holiday, but you can get the brand-new Lord of the Rings Trilogy Gift Box. Set to release December 20 and available to preorder for $145, this is a re-release of the superb 4K trilogy box set featuring The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. It contains the extended and theatrical cuts for all three films. This set is packaged in a book-like box with a faux-leather finish. And, surprise, there’s a map of Middle-earth on the interior cover of the “book.” You also get a replica of the One Ring from the Noble Collection. It comes with a chain so you can wear it as a necklace and a pouch with the LOTR logo emblazoned on it.
Meanwhile, Walmart is releasing an exclusive steelbook edition of The Fellowship of the Ring on January 7. After initially selling out of preorders, Walmart has restocked the film for $38.81. If the steelbook looks familiar, that’s because it’s the same steelbook edition found in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Limited Edition Steelbook Collection that was reprinted earlier this year and promptly sold out. It’s unclear if Walmart will also release The Two Towers and The Return of the King individually, too.
If you want to watch The Lord of the Rings before heading to the theater to see The War of the Rohirrim, the existing 4K Blu-ray box set is available for $65 (was $90) at Amazon. If you don’t mind standard Blu-ray, Amazon has a great deal on the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions that drops the price to only $30.
The Lord of the Rings: Tolkien Illustrated Edition Deal
As mentioned, The War of the Rohirrim is based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien wrote a ton of supplemental stories and histories of Middle-earth while drafting The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. If you want to read The Lord of the Rings (and its appendices) before or after watching The War of Rohirrim, Amazon still has the Tolkien Illustrated Series on sale for very close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday prices.
The big draw here is that The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition contains 30 full-color illustrations by Tolkien, but it’s also one of prettiest editions of Tolkien’s classic fantasy novel you can buy. It has red-stained edges with Elvish writing, a dust jacket with foil script and a stamped image of The Eye of Sauron. This edition also comes with two fold-out maps and a ribbon bookmark. If you’d rather not pay $40 for a book, Amazon also The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Edition, which has a nice suede-like cover, for just under $20.
The Tolkien Illustrated Editions of The Hobbit and The Silmarillion have the same premium features and aesthetic, and they are on sale for even less than The Lord of the Rings.
Amazon also has deals on the 2024 hardcover Collector’s Editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. These elegant hardcovers have foil-stamped cover art, stained edges, ribbon bookmarks, and maps of Middle-earth as endpapers. The Collector’s Edition splits The Lord of the Rings into its three volumes, but there is a nice box set featuring all three. It released on November 5, but Amazon already has The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set marked down to $72.63 (was $105).
